SPLIT   (map)

This coastal city of 200,000 people exports large amounts of olive oil, wine and fruit. Armed with this knowledge one can infer the surrounding landscape - fertile! High mountains to the north and east enhance the grandeur of the city. The 7th century Roman Emperor, Diocletian, based himself from here for a time and his palace still dominates the city view. Behind the palace to the north is the Old Town, and we recommend you wander through the maze of tiny alleys found here. One notable highlight of Split is the Cathedral of St. Dominicus. It is the oldest Catholic cathedral and inside are detailed wooden sculptures of biblical characters. The bell tower here took 300 years to build. Split also boasts a well recognized university.
